It’s been a big year at HMS. Two more essays have been recognized by The Best American Essays series as Honorable Mentions and we’ve received partial grants from Illinois Humanities, Illinois Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, and City of Chicago’s CityArts Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events.

Even with all of this recognition, we still very much need your support.

As you might know, we are a nonprofit (& independent) literature, arts, and culture magazine based in Chicago, Illinois. In each issue, we publish fiction, essays, interviews, visual art, poetry, and other fabulous items. Our print and online publications marry visionary imagination with innovative execution and we have always published the work of diverse and overlooked writers.

And since 2017, we have partnered with Chicago nonprofits to teach creative writing skills to hundreds of Chicago-area adults.
